How To Clone a Product

Many stores offer products that are pretty similar to each other, including having many of the same types of attributes and options. To make it easier to create these similar products, the system offers a Product Clone tool.

The tool creates a new product, and optionally copies the existing product's attributes, options, related product relationships, category relationships, and product attachments.

To clone a product, from either the Products grid, or a single product's details page, click on the three-dots menu for the product, and then select "Clone Product...". You'll see the above form. The "Code Prefix" tells the system what to append to the beginning of the product's code field when making the clone. This is necessary since the code field must be unique across all products. After the creating the clone, you can adjust the code field however makes the most sense. If the original product also has an SEO code, the same prefix will be used for the new product's SEO code field.

The other fields tell the tool which aspects of the product you wish to clone: whether to create the same attributes and options; whether to assign the new product to the same categories and related products; and whether to clone the product attachments.

Note: The clone tool creates a new product that is inactive, regardless of whether the original product is active or not. This allows you to review the new product and make any needed tweaks. When you are ready to display the new product, you can switch it to being active.
